We asked you on the AWI Facebook Page to share your favorite movies about women’s awakening and empowerment, and here is the list of movies compiled from your responses, updated with descriptions of each movie and a link to the trailer and reviews.

  5. As It Is in Heaven (Sweden)
    An internationally renowned Swedish conductor returns to his childhood village and agrees to help the local church choir hone their singing skills. This movie illuminates archetypal dynamics between people, creativity, spirituality and love, and you will find watching the women characters evolve as deeply cathartic, awakening and healing.
  6. Water
    The film examines the plight of a group of widows forced into poverty at a temple in the holy city of Varanasi. The women in this movie are confronted with the dynamic between the  brutal customs based on religion, and the wisdom and empowerment of their own hearts.
  7. Dangerous Beauty
    A Venetian courtesan becomes a hero to her city, but later becomes the target of an inquisition by the Church for witchcraft.
  8. Moonstruck
    Loretta Castorini, a book keeper from Brooklyn, New York, finds herself in a difficult situation when she falls for the brother of the man she agreed to marry (the best friend of her late husband who died seven years previously).
  9. Stealing Beauty
